The geographic details are usually pulled from a commercially available geolocation database. These commercial databases collect and maintain the information on geographic location of all routable IP addresses assigned, allocated and in use on the Internet as well as some other advanced information.
The country accuracy is estimated at about 99%. For IP addresses in the USA, it is 90% accurate on the state level, and 81% accurate within a 25 mile radius. The world-wide users of the geolocation databases indicate level of accuracy of GeoLocation within 25 miles as about 60%.
